Court System

  1. The Denver Probate Court has exclusive jurisdiction over all matters of probate, settlements of estates of deceased persons, appointment of guardians, conservators and administrators, and the adjudication of the mentally ill.
  2. The Denver Juvenile Court handles cases involving adoptions, child custody, child support, and modification of parenting issues or modification of child support.
  3. The Water Courts have exclusive jurisdiction over cases relating to the determination of water rights and the use and administration of water.
  4. The County Courts are trial courts that handle civil cases under $15,000, misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, felony complaints, and protection orders.
  5. The District Courts are another type of trial court but they handle civil cases in any amount, domestic relations, juvenile cases, probate matters and mental health cases.
  6. The Colorado Court of Appeals will hear appeals from all lower courts and its decision is final unless the Supreme Court agrees to review the case.
  7. The Supreme Court hears appeals from the Court of Appeals, but may hear direct appeals from lower courts if they petition.
