Court System

  1. The District Courts are courts of limited jurisdiction and are divided into two parts, the State District Courts and the Local District Courts. The State District Courts have territorial jurisdiction over cases including misdemeanors, violations of the law and state ordinances, preliminary felony cases, civil cases including contracts, and damage or recovery to personal property of matters less than $25,000. The Local District Courts also have territorial jurisdiction and their cases include misdemeanors, violations of the state law and local ordinances, preliminary felony cases, civil cases involving contracts, and damage or recovery of personal property in matters less than $5,000.
  2. The Circuit Courts consist of five subject matter divisions: criminal, civil, probate, domestic relations, and juvenile.
  3. The Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction, but their specific jurisdiction is determined by the Supreme Court. The decisions reached by the Court of Appeals may be reviewed by the Supreme court.
  4. The Supreme Court has appellate jurisdiction and any case may be appealed to this court. This court also exercises general superintending control over all courts of the state.
