Court System

  1. The District Court is a trial court of limited jurisdiction and they handle cases involving domestic violence, juvenile cases, misdemeanors, violations of city ordinances, arrest and search warrants, preliminary hearings in felony cases, civil cases that do not exceed a value of $100,000 and small claims cases with a maximum of $10,000.
  2. The Superior Court is a trial court of limited jurisdiction and they hear criminal and civil cases, juvenile delinquency, children who are abused or neglected, the property of a deceased person, domestic relations matters, guardianships and conservatorships, and they serve as an appellate court for civil and criminal cases that have been tried by district courts.
  3. The Court of Appeals accepts appeals from final decisions made by the Superior Court or District Court. They hear appeals in cases involving criminal prosecutions, post-conviction relief, juvenile delinquency, extradition, habeas corpus, probation and parole, and bail.
  4. The Supreme Court has the final state appellate jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters. They must also accept appeals from final decisions made by the Superior Court in civil cases.
